Governor Umo Eno’s Defection to APC

Governor Umo Eno officially defects to APC

Governor Umo Eno formally defected from Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to the All Progressives Congress, APC on Friday June 6, 2025.

The Defection Ceremony was held at Government House, Uyo, in the Banquet Hall.

He was joined by most of the members of his Executive Council, members of the State House of Assembly, National Assembly, and all 31 local government chairmen who joined him in the APC.

Eno was the first governor in the history of Akwa Ibom State to defect to another political party while in office and the seventh PDP governor in the country to change his allegiance to the APC since the party’s formation.

There were two main reasons he had for moving. First, his admiration for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership. Second, “the wish of Akwa Ibom State to align with the Federal Government at the centre, and ensure that it gets more development benefits. He said the decision came after a three-month-long process of keen consultation with critical stakeholders across the country including the youths, women groups, National and State Assembly members and the traditional rulers.

During the meeting, he referred to the Dalai Lama’s saying, “Open your arms to change, but don’t let go of your values,” explaining that his party’s platform has evolved, but his values remained unchanged.

The PDP in Akwa Ibom, however, dismissed the defection as a “setback”, and promised to make up for it in the future ahead of the 2027 general elections. Only two State House of Assembly members and former Commissioner for Information Ini Ememobong did not join him first.

The defecting had a major impact on South-South affairs. The decision came at a time when Governor Sheriff Oborevwori was also doing the same in his State, thus increasing the territories of the APC before 2027 and putting PDP on its losing side in the region.

They have since guaranteed to respect the deal made to accommodate Eno’s defection — including automatic return tickets for politicians who defected with him. He is still the APC leader in Akwa Ibom State.

Though the change of party, he has remained adamant that there is inclusiveness in governance in Akwa Ibom and that the ARISE Agenda is still on much the same footing.

Personal Life

Umo Eno believes in God, is a Pastor, a grandfather and widower. He lives in Uyo, in the Government House. In his time out of politics, he remains very much a pastor and entrepreneur.

He’s not openly talking about his wealth, but he’s there talking about things that benefit the community. His late wife’s GIFA project is continuing with his daughter Helen.

He has said his biggest pain in office is losing his wife. His favorite thing to see are the faces of rural households who are smiling inside their new ARISE Compassionate Homes.

His first four-year term will expire in 2027 and he is 62 years old. But as a defector who is now on the APC ticket, he should be looking to be re-elected on the same ticket in 2027.

Conclusion

Governor Umo Eno remains one of the most talked-about governors in Nigeria’s South-South, a pastor turned governor, a man who rose from modest beginnings in Nsit Ubium to lead an oil-rich state, who lost his lifelong partner in the Government House, and who made the boldest political switch in Akwa Ibom’s 26-year democratic history.
